Classic Britt Coffee Tour, Costa Rica

I say “Costa Rica,” you say “coffee!”

We knew we had to sample Costa Rican coffee when visiting this beautiful country, and there was no time like the beginning of the trip! The first adventure we embarked on after landing in San Juan, Costa Rica, was a tour of Britt Coffee Farm.

The Brit Coffee Tour is located conveniently close to the Juan Santamaría International Airport that most people fly into to reach San Juan, Costa Rica. After picking up our rental car from the airport, we drove less than 30 minutes to reach the coffee farm.

Coffee tour options include:

  • Classic Britt Coffee Tour ($31 per person, 90 minutes long) – tour of the coffee farm including the history and culture of Costa Rican coffee, coffee growing/processing/roasting, and a coffee cupping session
  • Britt Coffee and Adventure Tour ($145 per person, 6 hours long) – tour of the coffee farm, zipline, scenic trails and waterfalls
  • Britt Coffee and Waterfalls Tour ($149 per person, 8 hours long) – tour of the coffee farm, visit to La Paz Waterfall Gardens for trails and wildlife exhibits
  • Britt Coffee and Wildlife Tour ($125 per person, 6 hours long) – tour of the coffee farm, visit to Toucan Rescue Ranch, lunch at Cafe Britt

We opted for the Classic Britt Coffee Tour, as we wanted just the coffee experience and our flight arrived later than the morning departure times for the other more involved tours. This shorter tour is a great option for a brief experience of Costa Rican coffee.

The Classic Brit Coffee Tour was surprisingly genuine and humorous, thanks to our personable tour guide duo. The guides walked us through the process of sprouting coffee seeds to planting small trees, to a grower’s experience hand-picking coffee berries, to the actual roasting of the beans. We even participated in a coffee cupping. During the cupping session, we were taught to sniff the coffee before enjoying a spoon-delivered slurp that aerates the coffee spreading across the tongue, allowing for better detection of fine tasting notes.

Britt Coffee’s coffee berries and beans are sourced from coffee plantations all over Costa Rica. Only upon arrival to Britt is the protective parchment removed over each bean and beans are then roasted to order. All in all, the Britt Coffee Tour was well worth the time and was an enjoyable first stop in Costa Rica!
